1963 was a banner year for Virginia Beach. That's the year the town merged with Princess Anne County to become a city. Perhaps of lesser significance, unless you were a surfer, was the opening that same year of Smith and Holland Surf Shop. Situated on 22nd Street between Atlantic and Pacific Avenues, it was the first bona fide surf shop in Virginia Beach and set the standard for all others to follow.
Shop owners Pete Smith and Bob Holland were no strangers to the Virginia Beach surf community. Bob won numerous surfing championships during his competitive years and Pete would eventually become owner of Pete Smith's Surf Shop on 28th Street and Pacific Avenue.
Today, in Virginia Beach alone, there are any numbers of surf shops. But it all began with Smith and Holland Surf Shop. And what about Pete and Bob? Bob retired after many years as a harbor pilot with the Virginia Pilot Association. He recently celebrated his 80th birthday although he looks 20 years younger. Pete can be found on the weekends at Freedom Surf Shop on Laskin Road. You can pick up a copy of "GONE...But Not Forgotten, Virgnia Beach" at Freedom Surf and if Pete's there, he'll be glad to autograph it for you and talk about the good 'ole days. COWABUNGA!
Memories are truly a gift. They make the past come alive. They remind us of who we are, where we have been and often show us a path to where we are going. The mere mention of Virginia Beach is bound to conjure up special memories for just about anybody who has visited or lived here. "GONE...But Not Forgotten, Virginia Beach" is about dusting off those memories and making them clear again.
We have always been fascinated by the stories of “good ole Virginia Beach” passed on by the three generations of our family who lived at “the Beach” before us. Through our book we wanted to continue the legacy handed down to us by family and friends and to throw in a few new ones of our own.
As you read through the stories of "GONE...But Not Forgotten, Virginia Beach", it will hopefully trigger a special memory or two of your own. At the very least, we hope to bring a smile to your face as you remember these and other special memories of people and places that are gone but not forgotten.
